Governor Celebrates Workforce Development Month
Governor met with community leaders at Benchmade Knife Company; discussed strategies to connect businesses with skilled workers
(Portland, OR) - Governor Ted Kulongoski today joined business leaders and regional elected officials to conclude Workforce Development Month at a roundtable discussion. The event was hosted by the Workforce Investment Council of Clackamas County, to focus on economic trends in Clackamas County and how the state workforce system can effectively address business needs and expand economic opportunities for Oregon’s communities.
“My workforce strategies are designed to ensure Oregonians are equipped with the skills and resources they need to contribute and share in a strong and vibrant economy,” said Governor Kulongoski. “Oregon businesses need qualified workers, and Oregonians need good, family-wage jobs. These strategies will deliver on both of these components.”
The Governor proclaimed September as Workforce Development Month, setting the stage for local job fairs, television programs and business events throughout the state. The month-long series of events concluded at Benchmade Knife Company in Oregon City, where the Governor read the proclamation and highlighted accomplishments of the WorkSource Oregon system – the state’s workforce development system that connects employees with employers.
In 2004 more than 150,000 people found employment through WorkSource Oregon; more than four million dollars has been invested in Oregon businesses through the Governor’s Employer Workforce Training Fund; and more than 20,000 adults, dislocated workers, and youth found assistance through special programs designed to help unemployed workers become job ready.
“Focusing on matching worker skills to the needs of businesses will make Oregon among the most competitive in the nation,” says Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski. “I encourage every Oregonian to visit one of the many WorkSource Oregon Centers around the state to find out how this publicly funded service can help match workers with family-wage jobs.”
