Governor Appoints Bruce Goldberg as Director of the Oregon Department of Human Services
(Salem, OR) – Today Governor Ted Kulongoski announced the appointment of Dr. Bruce Goldberg as the Director of the Department of Human Services (DHS), pending Senate confirmation. The Interim Director, Bryan Johnston, was appointed in May, 2005 while the state conducted an extensive recruitment for a permanent director.
“Dr. Goldberg has dedicated his career to understanding how we can best organize, pay for, and deliver social services to our citizens,” Governor Ted Kulongoski said. “His expertise as a program administrator, educator, policy advisor – and most importantly as a physician – makes Dr. Goldberg uniquely qualified to address the health and social challenges facing our state to ensure we provide the highest quality of care to our most vulnerable citizens.”
Since 2003, Dr. Goldberg has held the position of Director of the Office for Oregon Health Policy and Research. Prior to state service, Goldberg served as the Medical Director for CareOregon – the state’s largest Oregon Health Plan managed care organization – served as the Public Health Officer for Columbia County and was on faculty at the Oregon Health and Sciences University where he focused on improving the health of migrant and seasonal farm workers and served as the Vice Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. Before relocating to Oregon in 1992, Dr. Goldberg spent five years working with the Zuni Tribe in New Mexico as the medical director and director of community health services at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital. He earned his MD from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and completed a residency in Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center where he also served on the faculty.
“I appreciate Bryan’s service to our state during this time of transition and his exceptional job of prioritizing the work of the Department and the employees on the frontlines,” the Governor said.
