Governor's Statement on Death of Oregon Soldiers
Flags to be flown at half-staff on Wednesday, September 28 and Thursday, September 29
(Salem, OR) – Governor Theodore R. Kulongoski asked that all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff on Wednesday, September 28 and Thursday, September 29, in memory and honor of Warrant Officer Adrian B. Stump of Pendleton and Sgt. Tane Travis Baum, also of Pendleton, respectively.
Warrant Officer Stump, 22, and Sgt. Baum, 30, died on September 25th approximately five miles north of Deh Chopan, Afghanistan when a surface to air missile was fired on their CH-47 helicopter during an extraction and fill mission according to inital reports.
“Today marks another devastating loss for Oregon,” said Governor Kulongoski. “My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these young men who served our country, our state, and our nation with great honor. Both of these men were important members of their units and will be sorely missed.”
The men served in Detachment 1, Company D, 113th Aviation Battalion, Pendleton, Oregon.
“While the death of any soldier is tragic, these deaths of our guardsman fall particularly close to home because these soldiers are our brothers, sisters, neighbors, coworkers, and friends. Those still serving are citizen soldiers who live next door.” said Governor Kulongoski. “We can never forget the sacrifices they and their families are making for us, and I continue to pray for their safe return home.”
The Governor also asks that Oregon media assist in advising institutions of the flag request.
