FEMA Alerts States to Remain on Stand-By
OREGON REMAINS READY TO ASSIST AS NEEDED
(Salem, OR) Tonight Governor Ted Kulongoski received a call from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) asking Oregon to remain ready for evacuees, however not on immediate alert due to changing circumstances in the Gulf Coast region.
Statement from Governor Kulongoski:
"I am gratified that it appears that federal, state and local authorities in New Orleans are getting control of the situation in the city and gaining confidence in their ability to handle the evacuation issues on a local level.
I want to thank the generosity of Oregonians individuals, businesses and organizations of all kinds and religious institutions who extended their hands to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. I am also very proud of how our cities, counties and state government worked together with the community, Red Cross, the Salvation Army, NW Medical Teams and other non-governmental organizations to develop a plan here in Oregon to serve the citizens affected by Hurricane Katrina.
We continue to stand ready to help at any time our fellow citizens affected by this terrible tragedy."
