Governor Issues Declaration of Emergency for Umatilla County
Declaration positions county to receive immediate state and federal storm relief, if necessary

Salem – Governor Ted Kulongoski this evening declared a state of emergency for Umatilla County, at the request of the Umatilla County Board of Commissioners, to help cope with the impacts of the storms and high winds that have hit the County.

The declaration was made verbally this evening at 6:50 p.m.

"Umatilla County officials have done a superb job at addressing the immediate needs of the citizens of these cities and the county and the state stands ready to quickly to give any help that's needed," said Governor Kulongoski.

Umatilla County has not asked for state assistance at this time, but the declaration gives the county flexibility over the weekend to immediately receive any needed state help as well as begin the process of acquiring possible help through FEMA for individual assistance funds.

Today's storms and primarily the high winds that have affected most of Oregon have particularly hit the cities of Adams, Athena, Milton-Freewater, Pilot Rock, Weston, and the surrounding rural areas.

Damage has occurred in the county to private structures, businesses, public buildings, road closures, utility lines and infrastructure. Numerous residents are without power and many homes have been damaged due to wind-driven debris and fires caused by downed power lines. Debris from roofs, fences, and trees has created a major cleanup challenge.

Oregon emergency management officials are monitoring the situation this evening and as long as necessary.

"As we have learned from the December storms that hit the Oregon Coast last month, it is important to respond quickly to ensure we get Oregon's citizens the help they need when disaster strikes," said Gov. Kulongoski.
