Governor inspects Hwy. 35 damage and calls for federal aid

Direct federal assistance necessary for permanent solution, says Governor

Government Camp, Oregon — Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski today inspected Highway 35 damage first-hand and called for direct federal assistance to forge a long-term solution for the area.

“Reopening Highway 35 quickly and safely is critical for the area’s economy,” the Governor said.  “We’ve set an aggressive date for the highway’s re-opening -- December 15th -- but need direct federal help to forge a long-term solution for the highway.”

On November 8th, the Governor declared an emergency for Clatsop, Clackamas, Columbia, Hood River, Multnomah, Lincoln, Tillamook, Lane, and Washington counties to pave way for federal highway aid for the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The Governor released a copy of a letter sent to the Federal Highway Administration seeking direct financial assistance for Highway 35.  The letter notes that the current situation “is not the first time in recent years that this highway has suffered significant damage.”

In addition to helping local residents and businesses, a more permanent solution would likely avoid the “continual, expensive, temporary repairs to re-open the highway after what seem to be increasingly common closures.”  The Governor noted that a more permanent fix for the highway would likely result in overall taxpayer savings.

Before departing to Highway 35, the Governor received a briefing from Oregon Department of Transportation officials on progress made.   The Governor also praised the professionalism of all state workers and contractors involved in the re-opening.  State workers completed Highway 18 repairs last week and expect a December 15th completion for Highway 35.

“We’re making progress, and I appreciate the good work of the numerous state agencies who’ve stepped up to help Oregon communities,” said the Governor.

The Governor renewed his commitment to directing all necessary state resources to hard-hit communities for timely and safe re-building.

“In addition to making travel difficult for motorists, closure of this highway carries significant economic impacts to businesses in Oregon,” said the Governor.  “The good work being done here today will ensure that Highway 35 is re-opened quickly and safely.”
