Governor Orders Flags to be Flown at Half-Staff in Memory of Oregon Soldier
 
(Salem, OR) – Today Governor Theodore R. Kulongoski asked that all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff on Monday, December 19, 2005, in honor of Staff Sergeant Michael S. Zyla.
 
Staff Sergeant Michael Zyla was assigned to the Army’s 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor, 3rd Brigade Combat Team and was killed on December 13th while conducting combat operations when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.
 
“Staff Sergeant Zyla served his country and his state with honor and distinction. I know that the town of Elgin, as well as the state of Oregon, mourns with me today. We will keep his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers,” said Governor Ted Kulongoski.
