Governor Announces New DAS Director
Tasked with carrying out governor’s goal of ensuring government is efficient, responsive and accountable
(Salem, OR) – Today Governor Ted Kulongoski announced the appointment of Lindsay Ball as the Director of the Oregon Department of Administrative Services (DAS), effective January 3, 2006. Current Interim Director, Laurie Warner, will remain at DAS and assist Ball through the transition.
“One of my priorities is to ensure that all of state government is efficient, effective and responsive to the needs of the citizens and communities it serves – and Lindsay has dedicated the last thirty years to carrying out this same mission,” Governor Ted Kulongoski said. “His ability to set clear goals and execute a plan to reach those goals has delivered results for all of our communities – including greater fiscal stability, integrity and accountability. These principles will guide Lindsay in this new role so that we create a strong financial foundation for Oregon.”
DAS works closely with the Governor in implementing the current budget, overseeing state expenditures and providing support in developing the Governor’s recommended budget and policies to the Legislature. This agency also supports state agencies by providing a strong and stable management infrastructure that both sets and monitors high standards of accountability to ensure that tax dollars are used productively and services are delivered efficiently. The Director’s office specifically manages all executive branch agencies; provides governmental and external communications; conducts internal audits; and houses the Operations Division.
“While it’s largely unknown, DAS is perhaps the most critical of state agencies in carrying out the responsibilities of government,” the Governor continued. “I look forward to working with Lindsay as part of my management team to create a budget that responsibly meets the needs of Oregonians today while continuing our commitment to budget stability, growing Oregon’s economy and expanding educational opportunities for all of our citizens in the future.”
Ball was appointed the Director of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in 2001 under which he streamlined operations, managed budget reductions and aligned agency expenditures with revenues, relocated the ODFW headquarters from Portland to Salem and led the creation of the Oregon Hatchery Research Center – the first of its kind in the nation. Prior to ODFW, Ball was a Captain with the Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division for 8 years. Ball started his career has an Oregon State Trooper in 1976.
The Governor also announced that the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission will meet in the near future to determine who will lead the agency on an interim basis during the search process for a permanent director.
