Governor Orders Flags to Be Flown at Half-Staff in Memory of Oregon Soldier
 
Flags to be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, November 22 in honor of Specialist Vernon Widner
 
(Salem, OR) – Governor Theodore R. Kulongoski asked that all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 in memory of Specialist Vernon Widner, 34, of Redlands, California.  Specialist Widner lived for several years in Reedsport, Oregon and is survived by a wife and son who currently reside in Coos Bay, Oregon.
 
Specialist Widner was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and was killed on Thursday, November 17 from injuries sustained during combat operations near Bayji, Iraq. 
 
“This loss extends beyond Oregon and impacts our entire nation,” Governor Ted Kulongoski said.  “My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Specialist Widner during this difficult time.  I know he will be missed.”
