Verizon – SMART Literacy Champions for Oregon

Governor Kulongoski and Joey Harrington
Named Verizon – SMART Literacy Champions for Oregon

(Salem, OR) – Governor Ted Kulongoski was lauded today by Verizon Communications and the SMART (Start Marking a Reader Today) reading program for his promotion of literacy throughout the state of Oregon. Detroit Lions Quarterback Joey Harrington was also given an award (in absentia) at Barnes Elementary School in Beaverton.

“Literacy has been a long-time passion of mine,” said Governor Kulongoski. “Every Oregonian should have the opportunity to live up to their fullest potential – and reading is the first step towards helping our children become successful adults.”

At Barnes Elementary, Governor Kulongoski was interviewed by 2nd and 3rd grade SMART students about the impact that reading has had on his life. In addition, he read one of his favorite SMART books – “Dog Breath.”

Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon and Verizon Reads presented SMART with a combined gift of $26,862 to help raise awareness and funds for literacy throughout Oregon.

“SMART is such an important program for our state,” said Governor Kulongoski. “Kids who need a helping hand are given books and encouragement – which is often enough to make them readers for life.”
