Governor Orders Flags to be Flown at Half-Staff In Memory of Oregon National Guard Soldier

(Salem, OR) – Governor Theodore R. Kulongoski asked that all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 in honor of Oregon National Guard Specialist Matthew Gregg, who lost his life in an accident on Interstate-5 on Sunday, November 6, 2005.

The accident occurred when Specialist Gregg lost control of the military vehicle that he was driving as part of an eleven vehicle convoy returning to Medford that were used as a part Operation Southern Relief (Hurricane Katrina efforts).

“Specialist Gregg died honorably performing his duty to the Guard and to the State of Oregon,” Governor Ted Kulongoski. “This tragic loss serves to remind us of the critical work thousands of soldiers contribute daily here at home. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time."

Specialist Gregg was 30 years old and is survived by a wife and young son.  He was assigned to the 141st Support Battalion, Medford, Oregon.
