Governor Kulongoski Declares October 16 – 23 “Oregon Harvest Week”
Governor calls on all Oregonians to join the fight against hunger

(Salem, OR) – Governor Ted Kulongoski today issued a proclamation declaring the week of October 16-23, 2005 Oregon Harvest Week – an annual week of events initiated by the Governor in 2003 to raise awareness about the issues surrounding hunger in Oregon; educate the public about the root causes of hunger; and strengthen the coalition of people taking action to end hunger in Oregon.

“Harvest time is a time of giving thanks – for the food we eat, our families and friends, our beautiful surroundings, and the many other blessings of life on earth,” said the Governor. “But too many Oregonians do not share in the bounty of this time of year and Oregon Harvest Week is an opportunity to bring attention to the those who are hungry in our state and to ensure all Oregonians have the food and nutrients they need to live successful and productive lives.”

Oregon Harvest Week is a partnership between the Governor, the Oregon Food Bank, and local government and community leaders.  Each day during the week, partners will hold events throughout the state to raise awareness about hunger issues, develop action plans to address hunger and related issues in their local communities, and raise money to fight hunger throughout the state.

“We can only win the fight against hunger if we all work together – government, business, nonprofits, the faith community and every individual,” said the Governor. “I challenge every Oregonian to join me during Harvest Week and take action to help end hunger in our state.”

Governor’s Third Annual Hunger Summit
8:00 a.m.

Governor Kulongoski each year sponsors a Hunger Summit to raise awareness and understanding of hunger issues and to inspire Oregonians to act.  The goals of the Hunger Summit and Harvest Week include raising awareness about the issue of hunger in Oregon communities, understanding the root causes of hunger, and creating new partnerships to fight hunger in Oregon.  Although hunger and housing have traditionally been seen as separate issues, the cost of housing is one of the root causes of hunger, which is why the Governor’s summit will focus on this relationship and ideas for solutions.
