Governor Signs Bill to Expand North Bend Airport
SB 152 will create jobs and access for both commercial and private travel to Oregon’s South Coast

(North Bend, OR) –Governor Ted Kulongoski today signed Senate Bill 152, which provides $10 million in lottery bonds for a terminal at the North Bend Airport.  The airport has typically been associated with Bandon Dunes golf course and the improvements will allow for additional tourism, recreation and business in the area.

“Many people think that this bill is about golf – but this bill is also about economic development for the entire Southern Coastline,” said Governor Ted Kulongoski.  “Having a healthy and flourishing airport that is accessible to commercial – and private – travel helps attract new business and retain existing ones.”

The North Bend Airport expansion is a three-phase, twenty year project, with $10 million dedicated to construction of a new commercial passenger facility.  The existing terminal will be transformed into a general aviation center.

Summers at the North Bend Airport bring dozens of private jets to the airport.  Needed improvements to the terminal, runway, taxiway and air traffic control will help private jets and facilitate commercial passenger flights to the area.  State money for the airport will be augmented by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants and private investment.

The Governor’s ConnectOregon package recently passed the legislature and will provide additional investments in non-highway transportation and is a follow-up to his 2003 transportation package.

“If we want to continue growing Oregon’s economy, we must improve air, rail and marine infrastructure – along with non-highway investments – to ensure Oregon’s transportation system is strong, diverse and efficient,” Governor Kulongoski said.  “ConnectOregon represents the next step in moving forward with our commitment to create a business climate in Oregon that supports moving people, moving goods and moving commerce.”
