Governor Welcomes Yahoo! to Oregon
The New Yahoo! Customer Care Center Will Bring Up To 180 Jobs Over Next Two Years

(Salem, Ore.) – Today Yahoo! Officials announced their decision to relocate a customer care center from Sunnyvale, California to Hillsboro, Oregon, bringing approximately 70 family-wage jobs to the metropolitan Portland area by the end of July 2005 with the goal of 180 jobs over the next two years.

“I have always maintained that Oregon’s business climate is a positive one because of our high quality of life, skilled workforce, and strong communities – and it’s clear from the selection of Hillsboro that Yahoo! recognizes all that we have to offer,” Governor Kulongoski said. “Yahoo! is exactly the kind of company we have targeted to both retain and recruit and it’s evident that our efforts are delivering the results we want – corporate citizens that share our values of family, opportunity and a commitment to creating an Oregon that is a great place to live, learn and do business.”

The Governor and the Oregon Economic and Community Development Department (OECDD) and County and City officials have worked in partnership to recruit Yahoo! to Hillsboro, providing the following financial incentives:
  • The Governor has committed approximately $180,000 from his Strategic Reserve Fund to assist the company in the costs associated with relocating its customer care center from Sunnyvale, California, which is contingent on the company’s commitment to create 180 jobs within the next two years – and 70 by the end of 2005.
  • Yahoo! will also receive a Workforce Response Training fund grant of $100,000 to be used for incumbent worker training after the company has been located in Oregon for 120 days.
  • Oregon's Jobs Plus program and the services of the Region II One-Stop Center have been offered to Yahoo! for employee recruitment purposes.
  • The regional partners of the City of Hillsboro, City of Beaverton and Washington County have also contributed financial assistance to enable to this relocation.

Yahoo! will host a career fair at the CAPITAL Career Center on May 18, 2005 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm for job candidates interested in learning about career opportunities with the company.  For more information, go to:http://careers.yahoo.com/
