Governor Announces Expansion of Hillsboro Medical Device Firm
$2.6 million investment will result in 140 new jobs

The Governor announced today that Acumed, a medical-device firm producing innovative fracture management solutions for the upper and lower extremities, is expanding its operations in Hillsboro to add 140 new manufacturing and engineering jobs over the next five years. Acumed, a privately held company, currently employs 130 people in Oregon.

“This is a great example of how important workforce development is to building a strong economy in Oregon,” said the governor. “With $200,000 from the Strategic Reserve Fund, the state was able to help Acumed with workforce training for their current and future employees in Hillsboro.  This investment will ensure that Acumed has well-trained, qualified workers for these new jobs, which are aligned well with Oregon’s diversifying economy. The medical device sector is the strongest element in Oregon’s current bioscience mix, and pays well over the region’s average wage.”

Acumed sought training assistance for lean manufacturing, specialized technical and programming skills, regulatory requirements, and language proficiency skills for an increasingly diverse workforce.

“We considered several other potential expansion sites,” said Alan Kozlowski, Acumed President. “With the cooperation of the Oregon Economic & Community Development Department, the City of Hillsboro and the Governor’s Office, Acumed’s decision to expand in Oregon was made much easier, as we were able to get quick answers to our questions and receive much-needed workforce training assistance,” said Kozlowski.

Acumed will add 37,000 square feet to its current 55,000-square-foot facility, and will complete the addition by July 2005.  Approximately $2.6 million will be invested in construction of the expanded facilities, and up to $20 million for new equipment will also be invested within the next five years.
