Statement by Governor Ted Kulongoski on the Death of Oregon Soldiers
Flags to be flown at half-staff on September 16, 2004

(Salem, OR) Governor Theodore R. Kulongoski asked that all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff on Thursday, September 16 in memory and honor of Specialist Benjamin Isenberg and Staff Sergeant David Weisenburg.

Specialist Isenberg and Staff Sergeant Weisenburg died September 13, 2004 from injuries received when their vehicle was struck by an explosive device while on patrol.  They also endured small arms fire.

“Today marks another devastating loss not only for the families of Staff Sergeant Weisenburg and Specialist Isenberg, but for all Oregonians,” said Governor Kulongoski.  “My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these young men who served our country – and our state – with great honor, and who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of our nation.”

The men served in Oregon National Guard’s 39th Infantry Brigade, 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry.

“Each lost soldier is a loss for every single Oregonian,” said Governor Kulongoski.  “The men and women serving bravely today in Oregon’s National Guard are leaders abroad and our future leaders back at home.  We can never forget the sacrifices they – and their families – are making during our country’s time of need, and I continue to pray for their safe return home.”
