Statement from the Governor's Office
(Salem, OR) A letter to the Governor of Oregon was intercepted at a Salem Post Office at 2:00 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2004 that was suspected to contain flammable materials, similar to the letters received by several other Northwest Governors.
The Governor stated that the interception demonstrates that the strong measures in place to identify potential threats and contain them are working. It is because of the coordinated and immediate response of the Oregon State Police, Federal Bureau of Investigations, and United States Postal Inspection Service that the letter now under investigation never entered the Capitol. The Governor thanks the employees of these organizations for their excellent work.
The mail service at the Capitol was not interrupted and remains in full operation. No additional security measures have been requested at this time.
