Governor Kulongoski Announces Community Health Care Forums

(Salem, Ore.)  Today Governor Kulongoski announced that during the month of September, the Oregon Health Policy Commission will hold ten town hall meetings throughout the state to evaluate the "state of health care" in Oregon.

The Commission was established by the legislature through HB3653 and is comprised of 10 citizen members appointed by Governor Kulongoski and four legislators.  The Commission is the policy-making body responsible for health policy and planning for the state with the goals of: ensuring citizens have access to essential health care services; improving health care quality; controlling health care costs; and encouraging healthy lifestyles.

"These public forums are important in our efforts to improve the health of our citizens.  They let us hear from Oregonians directly about the unique health care needs of their communities, allow us to engage in the tough discussion about how to prioritize resources to best meet those needs, and enable us to work collaboratively on establishing a long-term vision,"  said Governor Kulongoski.

The Commission will use the information it gathers during these town hall meetings to guide the development of short-term policies for the upcoming legislative session and a long-term plan to reform Oregon´s health care system so all citizens have access to needed health care services.

The public is invited to participate in the forums, which are scheduled for 6:00-8:30 pm on the following dates and locations.  Additional information about the Commission or the forums is available at: www.ohppr.state.or.us
