(Salem, Ore.) - Governor Ted Kulongoski today announced four grants to local healthcare workforce coalitions in Oregon for the purchase of healthcare simulation equipment. He also announced that he has appointed Molly Moore as Coordinator of the Governor´s Healthcare Workforce Initiative.

The healthcare workforce coalitions that received the healthcare simulation equipment grants are comprised of healthcare workforce provider, education, training, and first responder organizations. This round of grants was funded by the Governor´s Healthcare Workforce Initiative with funds received from the Oregon Workforce Investment Board, in cooperation with the Statewide Simulation Alliance.  Eight strong, competitive proposals were received from local coalitions and the governor´s long-term goal is to provide funding for all eligible coalitions.

The grants announced today include:
  • A $43,700 grant to a coalition of Linn-Benton Community College, Samaritan Health Services and the Oregon Pacific AHEC. The equipment will be located at the shared training site at Samaritan Health Services and user groups will be allowed to transport the equipment to their respective sites for use.  User groups include: clinics; public health agencies; long-term care facilities; high school health occupations classes; Oregon State University´s pre-clinical and sports science students; emergency medical techs and paramedics; and large industries in the area for first responder and mock emergency training.
  • A $49,864 grant to Mt. Hood Community College. The College will house the simulation equipment in a new building that will open in August.  Other coalition members who have declared intent to join include Boring Fire District; Center for Advanced Learning (a charter school); Gresham Fire and Emergency Services; Portland Adventist Medical Center; Portland Providence Medical Center; and Oregon Trail School District.  The intent is to serve Mt. Hood Community College health program students, Center for Advanced Learning students, as well as health care professionals such as EMTs, nurses, respiratory therapists, medical assistants and other incumbent health care workers.
  • A $38,408 grant to the Southwestern Oregon Simulation Coalition serving Coos, Curry, western Douglas and western Lane counties. Coalition members include Southwestern Oregon Community College; Bay Area Hospital; Peace Harbor Hospital; Curry General Hospital; Southern Coos General Hospital; Coquille Valley Hospital; Lower Umpqua Hospital; Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue; Coos Bay and North Bend emergency services and Gold Beach emergency services.  The simulation equipment will be used as a mobile unit in the delivery of undergraduate level nursing courses, and professional training for the multi-sector healthcare organizations located in this region.
  • A $31,976 grant to a Southern Oregon coalition consisting of Rogue Community College; the OHSU School of Nursing, Southern Region; Asante Health System; and Providence Medford Medical Center. Long term care may be included in the near future. Representatives from the above groups comprise a Rogue Valley Nursing Council that will serve as a steering committee in providing oversight of the Nursing Competency Simulation Lab.  The lab will be located at the Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.  Initially, the focus will be nursing but there is intent to include other disciplines at a later time.

The governor also announced the appointment of Molly Moore as Coordinator of the Governor´s Healthcare Workforce Initiative, in his Office of Education and Workforce Policy under the leadership of James Sager.

The vision of the Governor´s Healthcare Workforce Initiative is a dramatic increase in the quantity and quality of the state´s healthcare workforce.  Working with the Statewide Simulation Alliance and healthcare provider and education organizations, the Initiative has six key elements that include the creation of a statewide network of simulation centers; ensuring that the existing telecommunications capacity around the state is operational, accessible, and affordable; increasing the number of healthcare faculty; encouraging regulatory flexibility and the shared use of facilities and equipment; and ensuring the articulation of healthcare pre-requisite courses among public and private colleges and universities.  In all of these activities, there is an emphasis on increasing the diversity of the healthcare workforce.

Ms. Moore replaces Diane Vines who resigned to serve as President of the Oregon Science and Technology Partnership.
