Statement by Governor Ted Kulongoski on September employment numbers
(Salem) – “Today’s employment report is encouraging news. However, full economic recovery will be slow and I believe the state and all levels of government need to continue to be cautious and prudent in their budgeting.
“As Governor my focus remains on creating jobs, retaining jobs and helping those families seeking employment make ends meet during these difficult times.
“Today’s report to the federal government shows that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is delivering results for Oregon through the creation and retention of thousands of jobs in its first eight months of implementation, but this is just one step. We must continue to work across federal, state and local levels, as well as public-private sectors, to create job opportunities so we can put all Oregonians who want to work, back to work.
“Congress is also currently considering an unemployment benefit extension for states whose citizens have been hit the hardest by this recession. I have urged our delegation to fight for this extension, which could mean 20 more weeks of benefits for those still struggling to find work.
“This economic period remains uncertain for our families and our businesses, but what is certain is that we must continue to work together across public and private lines to help those in need manage through this difficult time and to ensure Oregon is well-positioned for the long term.”
