Statement by Governor Kulongoski on senate passage of healthy kids - healthy Oregon
Governor's priority bills that expand coverage and control health care costs advance for his signature
(Salem) – “Today the Senate passed House Bill 2116 and House Bill 2009, which represent the largest expansion of health care coverage and the most significant steps forward to controlling health costs since the enactment of the Oregon Health Plan two decades ago.
“Today’s action puts the state on a path to ensure that every child in Oregon and thousands more adults will have access to health care and gives us the tools to make health care more affordable for all Oregonians.
“This is the culmination of years or work by my administration, legislative leaders, citizen volunteers and health care providers to reverse the trends of declining coverage and rising costs that are hurting working families and businesses alike.
“In hard times, when many states have been forced to roll back health care coverage for their citizens, I am proud that Oregon has been able to take the lead in health care reform and expand access to care.
“We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but these will enable us to make health care more accessible, more affordable and more secure for all Oregonians.”
