Governor orders flags at half-staff in honor of Memorial Day
Flags to be lowered until noon on Monday, May 25, 2009, in tribute of Memorial Day

(Salem) -  Today Governor Ted Kulongoski ordered all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon on Monday, May 25, 2009, in memory of all Oregonians who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

“Just a few weeks ago I attended ceremonies across the state, marking the largest deployment of Oregon National Guard soldiers since World War II. This Memorial Day gives us a chance to reflect on these Oregonians, and all those who are currently serving our country overseas,” said Governor Kulongoski. “As we keep our soldiers serving abroad in our thoughts and prayers, we should also take a moment on this day to honor all of those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.”

The protocol for displaying the flag at half staff on Memorial Day is to raise the flag in the morning briskly to the top of the flag pole, then slowly lower it to the mid-way point of the pole. At noon the flag should be raised back up to the top of the flag pole.
