Governor Kulongoski Announces Changes at Oregon Department of Energy

(Salem) - Today Governor Ted Kulongoski announced the appointment of Mark Long to the position of Acting Director of the Oregon Department of Energy. Mark succeeds Michael Grainey in the position.

“Mike Grainey has been instrumental in helping me establish our state as a leader in combating global warming with renewable energy and energy efficiency,” said Governor Ted Kulongoski. “His knowledge and expertise on both state and federal energy policies has been critical in aggressively growing the renewable and clean energy sector in Oregon. I want to thank him for his service to the state.”

Mark Long’s position as Acting Director at the Oregon Department of Energy will be effective Monday, May 18.

Before accepting this new position, Mr. Long led the Oregon Building Codes Division which is part of the Department of Consumer and Business Services. Through his position as head of building codes, Mark Long has been leading the Governor's efforts to increase energy efficiency and integrate renewable energy and sustainable technologies into existing and new buildings. At DCBS, he also led the creation of the nation’s first statewide electronic permitting system to improve customer access to government services at both the state and local level and initiated a number of “green building” efforts, from the use of solar power and grey water reuse, to electric vehicle infrastructure.

“Mark is the right person to fill this position at this time in the legislative session as well as our economy,” the Governor said. “He has working knowledge of the legislative process as well as the role of energy in a strong economy.  Mark has the skills and leadership to lead this agency as we work in the final months of the legislative session to enact important policies to advance renewable energy and make Oregon more competitive in a global marketplace which is critical to a strong economic recovery. I am also confident Mark will continue to promote and advance our renewable energy and energy efficiency agenda well past the legislative session.”
