Statement by Governor Ted Kulongoski on house passage of low carbon fuel standard (HB 2186)
(Salem) - “Today the Oregon House of Representatives took a bold step forward by adopting policies that will help Oregonians reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“Thanks to the leadership of Speaker Dave Hunt and Representative Ben Cannon, House Bill 2186 will deliver immediate and significant greenhouse gas reductions across the state. This bill establishes a low carbon fuel standard for Oregon that will increase investment and create jobs in low carbon technologies and also significantly reduce the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere from gasoline and diesel fuel.
“This legislation gives Oregonians tools to reduce their carbon footprint by making replacement parts for vehicles that lower carbon emission available for consumers and by requiring repair shops to ensure tires are inflated at proper levels for maximum gas mileage. Additionally, this legislation reduces commercial truck idling by providing plug-in alternatives and saves gas by improving truck efficiency standards.
“While only one piece of my overall climate package, House Bill 2186 represents one of the most important actions we can take to ensure Oregon meets our statutory greenhouse gas reduction goals, encourages investments in cleaner transportation fuel options, and creates a greener and healthier Oregon for everyone in the years to come.
“I encourage the Senate to follow the lead of the House and send this bill to my desk for signature.”
