Statement by Governor Ted Kulongoski on first Oregon case of swine flu
(Salem) - “Today health officials identified what is suspected to be the first probable case of Swine Flu in Oregon. This is a rapidly evolving situation and I want to assure everyone that all appropriate and necessary actions are being taken to ensure the safety of the citizens of Oregon.

“This suspected case is being investigated by health officials, but in the meantime, Oregonians should remain calm and follow the recommended actions for protecting yourselves and your family: Wash your hands frequently and make sure to cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Also, if you are feeling sick, please do not go to work or school – contact your health care provider.  Lastly, try to avoid people who are ill.

“I want the public to be assured that we are taking this threat seriously and that the state public health and emergency response agencies, along with city and county public health and emergency response officials, are acting quickly to investigate this first suspected case in Oregon.  There are aggressive strategies in place to slow the spread of the virus.

“Again I ask the citizens of Oregon to act with caution, but to also remain calm and follow the recommendations of health officials in protecting yourselves from contracting the virus. I am in constant contact with health officials and all agencies involved in the response, and will continue to work with the public to ensure they have all of the latest information.”
