Governor's statement on Obama's appointment of Lubchenco
(Salem) – Governor Ted Kulongoski today issued the statement below following President-elect Obama's announcement during his weekly address that he has appointed Oregon State University professor Jane Lubchenco to lead the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
"The appointment of Dr. Jane Lubchenco as administrator of NOAA demonstrates the President-elect's commitment to pursuing public policy that is based on science -- not ideology -- and that will advance the health of our oceans, our marine wildlife and our economy the depend on the vitality of our water and fisheries.
"Oregon is a national leader in addressing global warming and environmental protections -- and Dr. Lubchenco has helped Oregon gain that recognition. It is an honor for our state and our university system to be represented in the new administration to move policies advanced at the state level to the federal level.
"President-elect Obama, his team and the entire nation will benefit from Dr. Lubchenco's expertise and passion for the health of our oceans, the species, people and businesses that depend on them, as well as her leadership at the national level to fight the effects of global warming."
