Statement by Governor Ted Kulongoski on Employment Numbers
(Salem) – "Today's employment numbers call for immediate action at both the federal and state levels to make investments that put Oregonians back to work and help our families during this difficult economic time.
"With an immediate injection of federal dollars, Oregon can break ground on $150 million in state highway preservation, safety and bridge projects this summer, and more than $200 million worth of construction at our universities within 100 days. This will create and sustain thousands of jobs and improve both our educational institutions and our roads and bridges.
"This infusion of dollars will help Oregon in the short-term, giving the state an economic boost while the State Legislature convenes in January to work on state measures that invest in our people and our infrastructure, including $2 billion in statewide construction, expanding health care, and new critical renewable energy projects.
"Now more than ever, Oregonians need to know that government -- at both the federal and state levels -- is on their side, helping them through this tough time in the short term and working to create jobs and economic opportunity for the long term.
"We will get through this recession and when we do, I want to ensure Oregon is ready to take advantage of the economic recovery and all Oregonians have hope and opportunity for economic security and prosperity."
