Governor Announces Opening of the 2008 Park-A-Year: Crissey Field State Park in Curry County
Sustainable features stand out at Crissey Field, serving residents and visitors to Oregon

(Salem) – Governor Ted Kulongoski today announced the opening of Crissey Field State Park and “green” state welcome center as part of his Park-a-Year initiative. The 40-acre park south of Brookings in Curry County is the fifth park opened since the Governor’s Park-a-Year initiative was started in 2004.

“As Governor, my goal has been to create more parks across the state so Oregonians can appreciate and enjoy Oregon’s abundant natural beauty,” Governor Kulongoski said. “Today’s opening of Crissey Field is a continuation of my efforts to ensure more of Oregon’s most beautiful areas are preserved for future generations.”

Crissey Field State Park includes a 4,500 square foot welcome center with many environmentally-friendly features including solar powered electricity and water heating and geothermal heating and cooling of the building’s interior.

“This new welcome center highlights our commitment to green building by using renewable energy technology in our public buildings,” Governor Kulongoski said. “The fact our Parks and Recreation Department managed to accomplish this year's new park using environment-friendly technologies shows Oregon's leadership in this growing field.”

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department has been using Oregon Lottery funds to repair and improve state parks, award grants to local communities and buy and open new parks. Since 1998, the department has made more than $100 million worth of park repairs, granted nearly $40 million to cities and counties, and spent $35 million to purchase 8,000 acres of new parklands.

The state parks created under the Governor’s Park-a-Year initiative include:
2004 – L.L. Stub Stewart, Washington County
2005 – Sunset Beach, Clatsop County
2006 – Fort Yamhill, Polk County
2007 – Thompson's Mills, Linn County
2008 – Crissey Field, Curry County

The Crissey Field State Park Welcome Center hours are 8 am – 5 pm from April to October, and 8:30 am - 4:30 pm from November to March. The parking area and restrooms will be open year-round from 8 am to a half hour after sunset.
