Statement by Governor Kulongoski on Daimler Closure of Freightliner Plant
(Salem)–“The announcement today by Daimler about their intention to close the Freightliner plant in Portland in 2010 is disappointing news, particularly at such a challenging time for our state and national economy.
“Freightliner has contributed significantly to Oregon’s economy, employing highly skilled workers with high wage salaries. The loss of these salaries will be felt by both families and the state.
“My short-term priority is to assist the employees and their families who are affected immediately as a result of this announcement. I have directed the Oregon Department of Employment to deploy a rapid response team and make all of the state’s workforce resources available.
“My long-term mission remains focused on diversifying our economic base by building opportunities in sustainable industries. Even during these uncertain times, Oregon continues to attract companies like SANYO and SolarWorld, creating hundreds of jobs and positioning Oregon as a national leader in this emerging industry.
“Oregon has been through good times – and through some very tough times – but after each economic downturn, Oregon emerges stronger, more diversified, and in a better position to lead America into the future.
“During times like now, our focus must be twofold – help displaced workers connect with employment while continuing to focus our resources on developing economic opportunity in industries that will create high wage jobs and be in high demand for the long-term.
“That is my commitment to the citizens of Oregon over the last two years of my administration: to position Oregon as a leader in the emerging industries that will ultimately serve as the engine of our nation’s economy.”
