Governor's Statement on Federal Aid for West Coast Salmon Fishers
(Salem)–Governor Ted Kulongoski today issued the statement below following the release of federal financial assistance for those affected by the closure of the West Coast commercial and recreational ocean salmon fishing season. The closure is the most restrictive fishing season in history.
With the Governor’s support, Congress allocated $170 million for the affected fishers and related businesses in Oregon, Washington and California. The federal government today released $100 million to help businesses and families meet immediate needs. The remaining $70 million will be released at a later date.
“Unfortunately this is familiar territory. Ocean salmon fishers, related businesses and their families were hit hard in 2006, and now are experiencing an even greater economic hardship this year. I am pleased federal disaster assistance for our fishing communities is on its way to Oregon.
“However, it doesn’t make sense that the entire appropriated amount is not available. As immediate needs are met, I, along side our Congressional representatives, will remain watchful to ensure that if the additional monies are needed, they will be readily available to Oregon’s fishing communities.”
