Statement by Governor on the EPA Decision to Deny Waiver for Stronger Tailpipe Emission Standards

Salem – “Yesterday’s announcement by the EPA is a statement from the federal government that they are not willing to do what is needed to combat global warming. Because of this position, we at the state level have no choice but to keep up the pressure by pushing forward on aggressive policies to combat climate change.

We will be working closely with the State of California to challenge this decision in court. Additionally, there are a number of policies that we can and will move forward on including implementation of those portions of the clean cars standards that did not require the EPA waiver and implementation of the landmark renewable electricity and renewable fuel standards that passed last session and that are important tools for reducing Oregon's greenhouse gas emissions. I will also pursue legislation to establish fuel-content standards that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Despite the EPA ruling, I believe the states absolutely have the right to adopt higher standards to protect their citizen’s heath and economic well being.  I remain committed to moving forward on the fight against global warming and climate change.”
