House Passage of Anti-Discrimination Protections and Domestic Partnerships
Statement by the Governor on House Passage of Anti-Discrimination Protections and Domestic Partnerships for Gay and Lesbian Oregonians
Salem – Today the Oregon House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 2, legislation that provides protection from discrimination based on sexual orientation, and House Bill 2007, which creates legal recognition of domestic partnerships for same-sex couples.
“I have been fighting for equal protections for gays and lesbians in Oregon since entering public office more than thirty years ago. After three decades, the Oregon House today has moved us closer to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation and ensuring all Oregonians are recognized equally under the law.
“Diversity and equality of opportunity make us stronger – not weaker. We don’t move ahead by leaving others behind. We only move ahead by affirming we really are one Oregon with one common destiny. Today we move a step forward – together – toward that common destiny.
“As I said on the Capitol steps just over a month ago, I have my pen ready, and I look forward to a swift Senate passage so we can truly make Oregon a land of equal opportunity for all.”
The two bills now move to the Oregon Senate for concurrence.
